# Ordinary

> Ordinary is a camera app for iPhone that records light instead of guessing it. Every frame is captured clean off the sensor — no AI, no automatic retouching, no invented detail. Film looks are set by hand before the shot and baked from real sensor data. It is made by one person, Tom Zahradka, in Prague, and is currently in open beta on TestFlight.

Ordinary exists to argue a position: photography does not need enhancing. Modern phone cameras decide what a photograph should look like — fusing several exposures, lifting shadows, smoothing faces. Ordinary keeps the decision with the photographer. The light you noticed and the instant you waited for are what ends up in the file.

The name is the thesis. An ordinary photograph, kept as it was seen, is enough.

## Scope

- **Platform**: iPhone, iOS 17 or later. No Android build yet; Android is planned after the iPhone version is finished.
- **Status**: open beta via TestFlight. App Store release planned for September 2026.
- **Price**: announced at launch. One-time purchase, not a subscription.
- **Made by**: Tom Zahradka — designer and illustrator in Prague, Czech Republic. Working alone; no company, no team.
- **Data**: no account, no server, no upload. Photographs stay on the device.
- **Pledge**: half of net revenue is donated to Linka bezpečí, the Czech helpline for children and students. Transfers are published on the site quarterly, as bank statements and donation certificates.

## What the app does

- **Clean capture** — one exposure, written the moment you press the shutter. What you see in the viewfinder is what lands in the file. Nothing is generated, retouched or invented afterwards.
- **Files** — HEIC or JPEG. No RAW: the look is chosen before the frame, not recovered from it, and there is no untouched original hiding underneath.
- **Film simulations** — hand-built looks baked from real sensor data: grain, exposure, white balance, lens character. Swipe across the frame to change film, live.
- **Manual control** — ISO, shutter speed, focus and white balance, as much or as little as you want.
- **The shutter is a joystick** — tilt for zoom and settings, press to shoot. The whole camera runs under one thumb, without looking away from the frame.
- **Auto** — the mode where nothing needs deciding. Point and press. Auto always starts clean, and you can set where it starts from if you want to.
- **Custom modes** — build the camera around the way you shoot and switch in a tap.
- **Double exposure** — two frames, blended and composed in the camera.

## On AI — the position, stated precisely

There is no AI in the photographs. One exposure, no frames fused, nothing generated, nothing smoothed. What the sensor saw is what the file holds.

There was a great deal of AI in the making of the app. Tom Zahradka described it into existence rather than coding it — several hundred iterations of stating what the camera should do, examining the result, and stating it more exactly. He treats this as method rather than shortcut: the same iterative approach he uses in design work, applied to a new tool, and partly an experiment in how far the approach could be taken.

Some of it could not be described to anything. Every film look was tuned by eye against a real emulsion; every gesture was tested with one thumb until it no longer needed a second one.

The two questions are kept separate and both are answered openly on the site: AI in the making, none in the picture.

## The pledge

Half of everything Ordinary earns goes to Linka bezpečí — the helpline Czech children and students call when there is nobody else to call. Its public funding is uncertain.

Transfers are published on the site: bank statements and donation certificates with dates on them. The first after launch, then every quarter. The commitment is to show the document rather than display a badge.

## What Ordinary is not

- Not an AI camera. No generative fill, no face smoothing, no scene recognition, no multi-frame fusion presented as a single photograph.
- Not a filter app. The look is chosen before the exposure, not applied to a finished picture.
- Not a replacement for the stock camera. Use both: the stock camera for a record that has to work, Ordinary when the photograph should look like something specific.
- Not a subscription, and not a service with an account behind it.

## Common questions

- **How it works** — it turns off the phone's guessing (no multi-frame fusion, no automatic HDR, no face smoothing, no scene recognition); it holds one exposure, exactly what the viewfinder showed, saved as HEIC or JPEG with no hidden original underneath; it adds a film look chosen before the frame, baked in at capture; and it leaves the rest to the photographer — the whole camera from the shutter, manual control, custom modes, double exposure.
- **Release date** — September 2026 on the App Store. Open beta on TestFlight until then. Wishlist members get one email the day it lands.
- **Removing the film look afterwards** — not possible. The look enters the pixels at capture and there is no untouched original underneath.
- **AI in photographs** — none. See the section above for the full position.
- **Android** — not yet. iPhone first, because the camera sits on Apple's imaging frameworks and one person can only keep one version honest. Android is planned once the iPhone version is finished.
- **Photographs uploaded** — never. No account, no server.
- **Verifying the donation** — statements published on the site quarterly, with dates.
