# Ordinary takes one picture instead of nine

**Prague, 12 August 2026**

Modern phone cameras capture a burst of frames every time you press the shutter and merge
them into a result that was, in a sense, decided before you pressed it. Ordinary doesn't.
One press, one frame, one exposure.

There is no multi-frame fusion, no noise reduction, no scene detection, no automatic
correction. ISO and shutter are yours, on a joystick under your thumb. There is a double
exposure mode, because two frames on purpose is a different thing from nine frames by
default.

## What it costs

This costs you something. When it is dark, the picture is dark. Noise looks like noise.
Some pictures will simply be bad, and there is no second frame to rescue them.

That was the point: a photograph you can get wrong is a photograph you can also get right.

Photographs are saved as HEIC or JPEG. There is no RAW file and no untouched original
underneath, because the look is chosen before the shot and written into the file as it is
made.

## What it belongs to

Ordinary is one result of a long inquiry into tools that leave the decision with the
person holding them.

The question is older than the phone and it has a name. In 1968 David Pye called it the
workmanship of risk: work whose outcome is not settled in advance and depends, at every
moment, on the judgement of whoever is doing it. Its opposite is the workmanship of
certainty, where a jig or a machine guarantees the result before the work begins. A phone
camera is workmanship of certainty: nine frames and an algorithm settle the picture
before the shutter moves. Ordinary puts the risk back.

The inquiry runs in more than one material. MONOCLELENS is the same question in optics:
a single optical element, recovered from used single-use cameras and built into finished
lenses, colour filters and DIY kits, at monoclelens.com. One element is how the first
cameras saw: one focal length, one aperture, and the photographer deciding the rest.
Making a lens that way is a way of working through how the craft came about in the first
place.

Optics and software are two routes into the same question. Each round leaves something
behind. This one is an app.

## How it was made

Drawn in Figma first, then built four times over, each version from scratch. What is in
TestFlight is the fourth shape the app has taken.

None of that work was adding features. It was removing them, one at a time, and finding
out what the picture does without each one. That is the slow half, and it is the half that
made the app.
