One person answers that address, and it is the person who wrote the app. Most replies go out within two working days. If something is broken, tell me which iPhone you have, which version of iOS, and what you did just before it happened. That is usually enough to find it.
What it needs
iPhone, iOS 17 or later. No account, no sign-in, and nothing to set up before the first photograph.
Things that come up
The picture is dark
It is meant to be. Ordinary takes one exposure at the moment you press the shutter, so a dark room gives a dark photograph. There is no second frame to lift the shadows with. Raise the ISO or slow the shutter in manual mode and the picture gets brighter and noisier, which is the trade every camera has always made.
The picture is grainy
Some of it is put there on purpose. Ordinary adds film grain to every photograph, and there is a Grain control under the image to set how much. Turn it down to zero and the grain goes away. What remains at high ISO is sensor noise, and that comes with low light in any camera.
I cannot find the original without the film look
There isn’t one. The look is written into the file as the photograph is taken, which is the point of the app, and it cannot be removed afterwards. If you want a plain frame, shoot with the Standard look.
There is no RAW file
Ordinary saves HEIC or JPEG only, for the same reason: the picture is decided before the shutter, not after it.
The camera screen is black
The app needs permission for the camera. Open Settings › Ordinary on your phone and switch Camera on, then reopen the app.
Photographs are not in my camera roll
They land in the app’s own gallery first, and go to your camera roll when you send them there. If nothing arrives, check that Settings › Ordinary › Photos allows adding photos.
I want the place written into the photograph
Turn on Save location to photos in the app’s settings. It is off when you install the app, and while it is off the app never asks your phone where you are.
What are the dots under the picture
Six recipes. Each one is a film and the settings that go with it, and Ordinary opens on the first. Swipe across the picture or drag along the dots to change it. With Ordinary Plus, holding the dots opens the recipes so you can change the film, the grain, the exposure, the name, and the order.
I changed something while shooting and want it back
Hold the shutter. With a control open it resets that one value, with none open it puts everything back the way the recipe has it.
The shutter does something I did not expect
The shutter button doubles as a joystick: press it to take the photograph, tilt it up and down to zoom, and in manual mode left and right to move through ISO, shutter speed and the rest. Let go and it returns to the middle.
Ordinary Plus
The app is free. Ordinary Plus is a one-time purchase, not a subscription, and it unlocks sequence, double exposure, four more films, and recipes you can change yourself.
I paid and it is locked
Open Ordinary Plus in the settings and tap Restore purchase. That asks Apple again, which is usually all it takes after reinstalling the app or changing phones. Make sure the phone is signed into the same Apple account that bought it.
Does my family get it?
Yes, if you use Family Sharing. One purchase covers the group.
Will it expire?
No. It is bought once and it stays.
Refunds
The App Store sells the app, not me, so refunds go through Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com. Write to me anyway if something went wrong. I would rather know.
Bugs and requests
Both go to the same address. I keep a list, I read everything, and the app is still changing. It has been rewritten more than once before it got here. I cannot promise a feature, but I can promise an answer.
